‘Don’t talk, but brush’ is a typical statement of Rotterdammers. But who is this Rotterdammer actually and how have they become as they are? The exhibition ‘Echte Rotterdammers (real Rotterdammers) at the Museum Rotterdam is a very fun and exciting show. It’s absolutely worth visiting if you want to know more about the city and its inhabitants.
Who are these people?
Immediacy, hard work, rawness: these words characterize Rotterdammers. But how do they feel themselves? In recent months, the museum asked the city's residents to describe their own feeling. Dozens of Rotterdammers have been photographed and all these pictures are shown in the museum. Of course that's not all there is. The exhibition is divided into five parts: work, sports, religion, youth culture and architecture. It’s about the past and the present. The museum presents paintings, clothing, tools and lots of pictures. What you see is explained on small screens (in both Dutch & English).
In the middle of the room is a long catwalk with mannequins wearing clothes from famous people from Rotterdam from 1750 to 2013. At the end of the catwalk is a large screen on which a huge animation of the city is displayed. The animated film is colored by hundreds of school children from primary schools in Rotterdam. Want to be creative too? Show your skills at the workshop area where you can embroider a ‘Kapsalon’, a typical dish from Rotterdam.

I work in communications and have kept an on-line fashion journal for years. I'll show you around Rotterdam, my home town, a magical place open on the world. Sparkling restaurants, deliciously hidden between sea and sky. My little extra: globetrotter and multi-lingual
