The church of Saint Germain des Prés
Dating from the 10th century, it is far and away the oldest church in Paris. It faces the sidewalk tables of the eternally famous café de Flore where generations of writers and beautiful people pass the torch. A bit further down towards the Seine, there’s the brasserie le Bonaparte, a hip, easy-going place. Then, to the right, the forgotten and little-known Musée national d’Eugène Delacroix on a charming little shady square. To the left is the rue Jacob and its many galleries for art and design.
The Hotels of rue Jacob
Les Maronniers is an attractive, traditional hotel. The rooms, although somewhat cramped, offer the most peaceful and unique view, either overlooking the small garden where breakfast is served in good weather, or across the zinc roofs of neighbouring houses.A bit further still, for the more modest budget, is La Villa, a chic, no-frills place, offers larger rooms with a more contemporary interior.
Paris for collectors
These hotels make the ideal home base for art collectors and museum-goers. They are the starting point for so many interesting and often unusual walks. You’re bound to pass the École des Beaux-Arts, where the recently restored glassed-roofed courtyard is worth a detour. The historic private residences are often hidden behind closed gates which you may be able to slip through if you’re feeling bold. In Paris, curiosity is not the worst flaw one could have.

Comfortable in working-class neighbourhoods and the tonier areas of Paris, I never get tired of rediscovering this timeless city. The Sex Pistols set the pace when I was younger. New technologies fill my working days now. My little extra: discovering fine eating spots around the capital for romantic dinners!
