This little restaurant doesn't look like one of the great ones. That's misleading. Located near the Parc de Belleville, it's a gastronomic destination where you’ll see life and the city through rose-tinted glasses...
The Belleville neighbourhood had long been ignored. It's becoming fashionable again. Bars and restaurants are opening for tourists and Parisians from the east side. Along with others, the Roseval is trumpeting the reconquest of the area with daring flavours and culinary elegance. But to enjoy them, you’ll first have to overcome the first impression the unwelcoming exterior is bound to arouse. However, there is no true success without risk. And the pay-off is all the greater for it. Just go in!
The interior design is spare: zinc, wood floors and S. Mouille wall lights. Two young chefs are at the controls. They're newly arrived, one from Italy and the other from Ireland. Neither is daunted by the challenge. Setting up in a neighbourhood off the beaten track, with few tables, and no lunch are three things you shouldn't do if you want to make your fortune in this business. They've dared to do all three and it’s working thanks to their market-fresh set menu. The dishes are colourful and elegant. The wine is organic. It’s a success. Abracadabra! A standing ovation for the magicians.
Hours: Evenings Monday to Friday
Menus €35 or €42 (with cheese)
Food and wine pairings: €50/€57
Comfortable in working-class neighbourhoods and the tonier areas of Paris, I never get tired of rediscovering this timeless city. The Sex Pistols set the pace when I was younger. New technologies fill my working days now. My little extra: discovering fine eating spots around the capital for romantic dinners!
