Why not give yourself a treat with a real cultural outing by going to enjoy a classical music concert at the one place where everyone understands each other: the one-and-only Opera House?
It was during the mid sixties that the Offenbachplatz Opera House was opened in Cologne. Named as a tribute to the famous French composer Jacques Offenbach, the building resembles, according to the city’s residents, an “Indian tomb”. In fact the man who designed it, architect Wilhelm Riphahn, wanted it to be a symbol of modernity at the time. Today it is still known as the “new” opera house, as opposed to the old one, which was destroyed in 1958.
For adults and children
The programme is especially wide-ranging towards the end of the year. In November, for example, Verdi, Mozart and Naske will be taking centre stage, preceded by a number of evenings and events paying tribute to Gwyneth Jones. In December, Richard Strauss will be the focus of this amazing location. And to get children and teenagers interested in classical music, Pinocchio by Simone Fontanelli is also scheduled for December. There’s nothing like it for a bit of mellowness at Christmas. Don’t forget to ask for a programme and look at the Opera House’s website.
The Cologne area provides my daughters and I with real quality of life. I like conviviality, healthy things, crafts and every kind of creativity. Together, we'll explore the side of Cologne that promotes the art of living. My little extra: the art of living.
