Bento is the hottest fast food trend in Cologne. Practical after a film, school or for a quick meal at the office, these colourful little restaurants are popping up all over town.
Japanese fast food
In Japanese, bento means snack or quick meal. Traditionally, Japanese women prepare them for their husbands or children, as in Japan they don't really have cafeterias. Anyway, since nowadays we’re all in a hurry, at least we can have a healthy meal! In the colourful little Bento Box restaurants you can get a tasty meal of sushi, noodles or salads in less than 10 minutes.
Chopsticks all around
Here, you’re not allowed to use a knife and fork. In fact cutlery is nowhere to be found. If you don’t know how to use chopsticks, you’d better get with the programme. Skewers of caramelised prawns and deep-fried chicken croquettes, which you dip in sesame sauce, remain easy enough to eat. Luckily, traditional sushi, with ginger slices or wasabi, are easy to handle with Japanese chopsticks! I love the bowls of salad, made with finely chopped fresh vegetables, or the Japanese noodles in their divine sauce. This adorable little fast food chain already has 2 outlets in Munich and Cologne. Give it a try!
