In 2014, the animals of the Cologne Zoo witnessed the arrival of some new neighbours, the animals of the Clemenshof educational farm. The new arrivals were not species from exotic countries threatened with extinction, but were illustrative of the diversity of the region's farm animals.

A typical farm of the region

In order to raise awareness among children living in the city to the animals of the region, to show that cows are not purple and not all pigs are pink, Cologne Zoo decided to open a farm! The new, 4,200 m2 farm, known as “Clemenshof”, hosts a range of animals representative of those from local farms: calves, cows, pigs, hens...

The farmer in his meadow

While the zoo farm doesn't practice intensive rearing for commercial ends, the use of animals and sustainable agriculture are key issues addressed by “Clemens” the farmer, who sees himself as a middle-man between the animals and people. Committed to biodiversity, the farm brings together those animal species which are under threat due to their low profitability or because the flavour of their meat no longer meets market demand.

I'm a translator and editor for several publications and I love the hidden side of the city, its secret gardens, its discrete gourmet restaurants and its new, high-design spots. Outings with my friends end late at night. My little extra: a dynamic, fun and really trendy Cologne!
