A gourmet getaway in BrittanyCologne
What happens when a lover of all things from Brittany imports her traditional recipes to Cologne? Well, without leaving the city confines, you can sample sweet and savoury crêpes, all prepared with the utmost respect for tradition and each one more delicious than the next!
On the lookout for crêpes with salted butter
I have been a big fan of crêpes since my childhood, but I became resigned to abandoning the pleasure of Breton recipes when I moved abroad. Little did I know that La Galette would provide a little slice of Brittany in the heart of Cologne! This place has decidedly awoken the nostalgia within, fuelled by years of exposure to home-made Breton cuisine.
The taste of authenticity
At the centre of this small restaurant, with its rustic interior, girdles sit proudly, ready to make freshly prepared crêpes and galettes. The welcoming and attentive staff will help the uninitiated to choose from the typically Breton food and drinks available: wholemeal black-flour galettes, flambéed or caramel crêpes made with salted butter, cider, chouchen, etc. With the exception of a few audacious combinations, the Breton tradition is respected absolutely and executed to perfection. The icing on the crêpe (!) is the excellent value for money (starter, galette and crêpe for €15).
Open Tuesday to Friday from 5.30 pm to around 10.30 pm.
I'm a translator and editor for several publications and I love the hidden side of the city, its secret gardens, its discrete gourmet restaurants and its new, high-design spots. Outings with my friends end late at night. My little extra: a dynamic, fun and really trendy Cologne!
