Poetry is anything but dead. Cologne audiences are wild about the rising stars of poetry slam, and these verbal sparring sessions are being held at the hippest clubs.

In the land of the poets

The first time that I wanted to attend a poetry slam night, I arrived a few minutes beforehand, figuring that a bunch of unknown poets reciting their work would hardly attract a sell-out crowd. Not only was I too late to get a seat, but the next time I tried, the room was absolutely packed, with members of the mostly young audience even sitting on the floor to listen. There's something really magical about a poetry slam. Something about the play of the rhymes, words and emotions voiced by these modern poets, that fascinates Cologne audiences of all ages and has made these events the place to be.

Laughter, rage, despair

Picking up on the trend, the leading nightlife venues such as the Club Bahnhof Ehrenfeld, the Wohngemeinschaft, the Blue Shell and the Sonic Ballroom were quick to offer slammers sought-after slots in their programming. Most of the events take the form of competitions where participants of all backgrounds vent their stories, hopes and despair, with or without rhyme, and with a comical wink or a bitter edge. With winners chosen based on the audience's applause level, these poetic jousting sessions can truly become addictive.

I'm a translator and editor for several publications and I love the hidden side of the city, its secret gardens, its discrete gourmet restaurants and its new, high-design spots. Outings with my friends end late at night. My little extra: a dynamic, fun and really trendy Cologne!
