At a time when digital technology makes everyone feel like a talented photographer, spending some time in a cultural establishment dedicated to the art can be very rewarding. The HQ for Brussels' photophiles is, without a doubt, Contretype.
Hôtel Hannon didn't host the contemporary art centre for photography prior to its purchase by the municipality of Saint-Gilles in 1979. This beautiful 1902 Art Nouveau building was originally a private mansion. It owes its name to its silent partner, Edouard Hannon, an engineer by training and a passionate photographer. The city mansion has been living to the rhythm of exhibitions organised by the Contretype association since its restoration in the 1980s.
Talents from here and elsewhere
In addition to preserving Edouard Hannon's photography work, Contretype also promotes creative photography through exhibitions, artists’ retrospectives, conferences and exclusive publications. The venue specialises in contemporary photography but has no preference for a particular approach or style. It’s a required stop for lovers of the art form. To be enjoyed without moderation!
I work as a fashion consultant, tear through the papers every morning, race off to concerts whenever I can and claim ""belgitude"" as a guarantee of original quality! My little extra: new shops, trendy concept-stores, organic restaurants and artists' workshops.
