Although the popularity of organic produce means that Brussels is not short on retail outlets, I have a soft spot for Essence Sauvage, a grocer’s/bakery just off the Place de la Monnaie. I regularly go there to buy my bread and succumb to the tempting pastries and other delights.

Two Belgian bread makers

What sets Essence Sauvage apart is its bakery produce, including two organic Belgian bread labels, Bionam and Le Bon Pain. Their philosophy is 100% natural, meaning they add no fat, no oil and no gluten and also use organically produced seeds. The result is absolutely delicious. I could eat nothing else if left to my own devices!

A warm welcome

People come here because of the warm welcome and consistently high quality. It's an opportunity to discover exciting flavours and authentic produce, a far cry from the disappointment of mass-produced food.

Open Tuesday to Friday from 10 am to 6 pm and on Saturday from 10:30 am to 5:30 pm.

Philippe, 38 AESTHETE

My fashion job takes me around the world throughout the year. I love flea markets and hunting for antiques year round, meeting up with friends at art show openings, going to fashion shows and being first to discover a new restaurant.
My little extra: introducing people to the "arty" and underground side of Brussels!"
