Having inhaled more than my quota of CO2 for one day, I felt I needed a moment of calm. More or less by chance, I found refuge in the Pure Bar. Initially surprised by the mixed decor, I eventually settled into some misshapen cushions arranged on the floor.

A unique spot

The Pure Bar opened in 2006 and is the only oxygen bar in Belgium. It has two distinct sections, although there is some cross-over. One has round glass tables with transparent orange seats that make for a design-conscious and quite fancy space. The other immerses you in a tale from the Arabian Nights. Raised areas covered in blue carpet and scattered with cushions offer a relaxing environment.

Air or smoke – why not both?

At the bar you can spend 10-15 minutes inhaling a blend of oxygen and essential oils, designed as a relaxant or mild euphoriant. Noémie and Gérald, the brains behind the Pure Bar, have decided to introduce a trial offer of free samples on Sundays. Away from the bar, tables are laden with teapots, fruit nectars, milkshakes, ice-cream floats and hookahs*. Regulars enjoy the coconut nectar, which is a pure delight.

Evening calm

As the evening sets in, the music drifts between lounge and jazz. Perfect to recoup and take a breather after a busy day. And there’s a surprise in store: a new section will be opening in July, with a never-before-seen attraction for Brussels. Such mystery should make this spot even more unique.

* Smoking seriously damages health. Smoking kills.

Gabriel, 32 TENNIS PRO

I teach tennis in the city and also write about culture for a number of publications. I love to travel and meet people. My city? It's an improv concert in a down-to-earth bar, an exhibition built on a work site, a play performed in the heart of the old city... My little extra: combining sport and culture!
