ANTOINE: FRENCH FRIES AS A HERITAGEBrussels

Best French fries in the worldAntoine’s reputation has even crossed the Atlantic. The New York Times asserts that it produces the world’s best fries, and you wouldn’t doubt it for a moment. The business was opened in 1948, when Antoine Desmat and his wife, who were fairground people originally, decided to give it a go at Place Jourdan. Their recipe is a simple one: fresh chips, peeled and cut in-house, cooked in highly refined beef fat and no preservatives, to ensure maximum flavour.
Crunchy and creamyThe results speak for themselves; light and golden, crunchy on the outside and creamy inside. The fries you get at Antoine are a little taste of paradise. It’s a popular place, and you sometimes have to be patient and queue, but the fries are worth it. It’s a lovely place to go. From its well-recognised customers like Johnny Hallyday, with his familiar routine, to anonymous ones, everyone hurries to the fries booth on Place Jourdan. Talent and passion are what created the reputation of Maison Antoine, which is today, and which will be for a long time to come, part of Brussels’ heritage.
I teach tennis in the city and also write about culture for a number of publications. I love to travel and meet people. My city? It's an improv concert in a down-to-earth bar, an exhibition built on a work site, a play performed in the heart of the old city... My little extra: combining sport and culture!
