The city of Antwerp has got many nicknames and one of them is "Cookie-town".

Yes, we make one of the finest cookies in Belgium!

A hard story …

The history of the name of Antwerp comes from an old legend with a giant living in a castle and a handsome human called Brabo who chopped off the hand of the giant and threw it away in de river Scheldt. ‘Hand-werpen’ means ‘hand-throwing’. It’s as simple as that. Because of this cruel story, we made some excellent cookies in the shape of a hand. It is the symbol of the city. It’s on the official shield of Antwerp.

Antwerp cookie federation, it’s serious !

If anyone wants to sell the Antwerp Hand-cookies, he needs to have an official license by the Antwerp cookie federation. Most of the bakeries are selling these tasty butter cookies. But the best place to get yourself these little biscuits is at Philip’s Biscuits. Philip, the founder of this shop, is a real specialist in making cookies. He sells nothing but biscuits since 1985. His window is all the time easy on the eye and a joy for children.
Whenever you buy these cookies and give them as a souvenir to your family and friends, it is a symbol of true friendship, the story says... Just to let you know, I believe in this kind of tales...

Open Mon-Sat from 10am till 6pm.

Antwerp has no secrets for me: designer shops, fashion design and custom-tailoring workshops, pastry shops you can't afford to miss, small, quaint hotels off the main tourist routes, cultural book shops and wine bars... You'll love to come back. Promise! My little extra: fashion!
