Notre Dame of Antwerp is the pride of the city of Antwerp. It's 119 metres long, 123 metres high, has 125 columns and 128 windows making it the largest Gothic cathedral in Belgium.
A mixture of styles
Antwerp’s Notre Dame Cathedral balances "being" with "becoming". Its northern tower has dominated the city for nearly five centuries, like a finger pointed toward God. The cathedral has been restored and reworked several times during its history without ever taking on a definitive shape. Different styles live side by side: Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo, etc.
To each period its treasure...
The cathedral shelters a marble Madonna from the 14th century, several wall paintings from the 15th century and a majestic statue of Our Lady of Antwerp from the 16th century. There are also four Baroque masterpieces by Rubens from the beginning of the 17th century, a tabernacle representing the Ark of the Covenant and a large 18th century clock at the top of the tower. The neo-Gothic decoration is from the 19th century and the sculptures over the main portal were added at the beginning of the 20th century. The latest acquisitions are the Metzler organs installed in 1993 over the entrance to the southern part of the ambulatory.
Born in Africa, I've lived between Europe, the United States and my homeland. A real mix of cultures! I'm always connected to social networks and on the lookout for great fashion, lifestyle, music and outing deals. I work in Antwerp as a public relations manager. I'm also a presenter for a TV music channel. My little extra: I like to get out and meet people.
