When my head’s buzzing or when my timetable is beginning to get out of control, I give myself an hour or so’s climbing at the Klimhal climbing centre. With its concrete frame and 21 metre high main wall, Klimhal is the perfect place for people who enjoy climbing, as well as professional climbers. I mostly go there in winter, simply to stimulate my mind and my energy levels.
Unlike what people may think, I’m not the only person here who loves climbing. The residents of Amsterdam are real sportsmen and women at heart, and are constantly on the lookout for new challenges. They come here all year round, whether they’re solo, in couples or in families. Klimhal is never empty, even at Christmas. Climbing requires strength and concentration at the same time, which is a well-known combination for training your neurons so as to surpass yourself physically.
The great thing about Klimhal is that it provides a wide variety of lessons with thorough training. You can start off gently and allow yourself small, gravity-free falls onto the ground, before progressing to more vertiginous walls. The more reckless can reward themselves at the centre’s café at the end of their lesson, by rehydrating themselves properly after all the energy they’ve used. As well as this, the centre is well-located and easy to get to.
Open on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5 pm to 10.30 pm, on Wednesdays from 2 pm to 10.30 pm, on Fridays from 4 pm to 10.30 pm, on Saturdays from 11 am to 10.30 pm, and on Sundays from 9.30 am to 10.30 pm.
I love Amsterdam's open spirit. It's easy to meet people and have rich, interesting conversations. The heart of the city is bubbling over with cultural initiatives, secret restaurants and nature routes that relax you in no time. I want to share it all with you!
