Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise, the European capital for felt is Amsterdam. At Shirdak, it’s all about passion. A passion for craftsmanship, for design and for beauty. The kind of shop that has become a rare breed.

Straight from Kirghizstan

From richly upholstered accessories, to exquisite clothing and handmade hats: I never pass up the chance to stop at Shirdak. The sumptuous colours of the fabrics, with their patterns inspired by nature put me in an upbeat mood. The wall-hangings in 3D felt create a warm, cosy atmosphere. You’d almost think you’d stepped into a yurt! And that is exactly the effect intended by the owner of the shop, Marianne Tuerlings, a Dutch woman devoted to sharing her passion for the textile arts of the nomadic peoples of Central Asia, especially Kirghizstan.

Design meets tradition

In her shop, Marianne is not content to simply sell the items she has bought from small-scale Khirghize artisans: she also offers a showcase for European artists and stylists working in felt. The result is an astonishing mix of genres. You’ll find design creations displayed next to traditional hats by Khirghize artisans. Personally, I just love the tiny candy-coloured baby-booties (the perfect baby gift, take note), the pretty scarves in the shape of leaves that snuggle around your neck, and cushion-covers in geometric patterns. Give in to this world of temptation ! Open Monday to Friday from 11:00-17 :30, Saturday from 10:00-17:00.
Laurence, 46 a cool mum

I’m the mother of two supercharged children. I’ve also been living a great love affair with Holland for the past 20 years! I’ll take you to places in Amsterdam that will make you feel good, where the products and the welcome are high quality and where, most importantly, you’ll never stress out. Ready to go?
