FLOWER FEVER AT FLORA HOLLAND
+ 31 (0) 297393939
A logistics tour de forceAdmittedly, it’s not right next-door. But if you take bus 172 from Amsterdam Central Station, you’ll be in Aalsmeer 55 in minutes, directly outside the main entrance and believe me, this is worth the trip! Even my husband, aware of the important role played by the horticultural sector in his country, was bowled over by the sheer size of the place and the logistics system. From a raised gallery that overlooks the entire length of the main hall, you can watch the incessant ballet of forklifts ferrying the flowers from cold storage to the market halls, and then, once sold, transferring them to the distribution areas where the lots are sorted and readied for transport.
The auction, the heart of the marketIn the hall, the heady fragrance of thousands of fresh flowers assaults the nose. Take a walk along the platform, and read the informative panels that explain how the market works. Be sure to go all the way to the end or you’ll miss the main event: the market at auction. It’s in these state-of-the-art computerised halls that buyers come to negotiate from the crack of dawn. Finish the visit with the shop or the cafeteria, both of which have perhaps seen better days, but renovations are planned ! Open Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 07:00-11:00, Thursdays from 07:00 to 09:00. Closed Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. Guided tours available in Dutch, English and French (upon reservation).
I’m the mother of two supercharged children. I’ve also been living a great love affair with Holland for the past 20 years! I’ll take you to places in Amsterdam that will make you feel good, where the products and the welcome are high quality and where, most importantly, you’ll never stress out. Ready to go?
