I've already told you about the B&B 'Cake under my pillow', but not about the irresistible pastry shop/tearoom on the ground floor. And believe me, it's a sweet discovery!

A crazy, happy world

Created by Siemon de Jong, who became famous for his pastry-making broadcasts for children on Dutch television, 'De taart van mijn tante' (my aunt's cake) is a wacky, ultra-kitschy space where relaxing with a slice of cake will boost your spirits to no end. You don't push the door to this tearoom, no, it's a 'pull'!

And everything else is definitely a little offbeat too. You'll be astonished to discover the interior crammed with vintage furniture, multicoloured tablecloths and artificial flowers. And each table is crowned with a cake several layers high, encrusted with decorations. A tip: don't try taking a bite (they're fake, except for the marzipan), and just hurry up and order your pastry!

Temptation, pure and simple

I say 'hurry', but that's easier said than done! The pastries are so delectable that choosing is torture… Try the succulent lemon curd tart (my favourite for its touch of acidity), or the one with chestnut purée decorated with chocolate truffles, or the blueberry cake with poppy seeds. It's a perfectly legal way to alter your mood in Amsterdam! And if you prefer the classics, try the Dutch Apple pie or the Anne-Marie. The light cake soaked in liqueur with a strawberry-raspberry purée has turned many a heart to jelly!

Open daily from 10:00 to 18:00.

Laurence, 46 a cool mum

I’m the mother of two supercharged children. I’ve also been living a great love affair with Holland for the past 20 years! I’ll take you to places in Amsterdam that will make you feel good, where the products and the welcome are high quality and where, most importantly, you’ll never stress out. Ready to go?
