Rarely has a museum captivated me as much as the Amsterdam Tattoo Museum. It tracks the history of tattoos, this ancient art form now considered a means of self-expression - it’s fascinating!
In all honesty: without my teenager daughter's influence, I probably wouldn't have set foot in there. Tattoos aren't really my cup of tea. But the anthropological collection in the museum won me over. It showcases all sorts of items that the Dutch tattoo king, Henk Schiffmacher (nicknamed "Hanky Panky"), who notably inked rock royalty such as Kurt Cobain, has collected from his trips around the world. Amongst them, tattooed skins in formaldehyde and the first electric tattoo machine dating from 1891!
From primitive societies to present day
Through the glass cabinets, the magical, decorative or social significance of tattooing takes on its own meaning. The prejudices fall away. For sure, anchors adorning sailor's biceps are there, but also the diverse range of pigments, techniques and motifs from Africa and Asia! Europe isn't left behind; currently it produces some of the best tattoo artists such as Philippe Leu from Switzerland, who occasionally visits Amsterdam. Upstairs there is a studio where you can, by appointment, get yourself a tattoo by one of the big names on the scene.
Open every day from 10:00-19:00 Closed all day on 1st January, 30 April, and 25 December. Closes at 16:00 on 26 and 31 December.
