Due to work on the high-speed line in The Netherlands, trains will not stop at the Schiphol station.

The Schiphol station can only be reached by local trains departing from Rotterdam. To reach Paris, Brussels or Antwerp, you must purchase a ticket from Rotterdam. Print then your travel confirmation to travel free between Rotterdam and Schiphol. This will be your ticket.

You can see in the paintings by the Dutch Masters that winters are harsh in The Netherlands, and you’d be forgiven for thinking that ice skating is the only winter sport they have there. But this is no longer the case.

All you could want from a skiing resort

Snow Planet is an indoor skiing piste just half an hour from Amsterdam. The snow is artificial and the slope is equivalent to a red run. There is also a nursery slope with a moving walkway serving as a lift, together with an area with moguls and ski-jumps.
What I like about Snow Planet is that everything’s on hand. You can hire skis at the bottom of the pistes and people who come regularly can buy their equipment in the shop next door.

Fondue at the foot of the pistes

And of course there just has to be a bar and restaurant at the bottom of the pistes. The speciality, needless to say, is fondue and hot chocolate, served looking out onto the piste. Sadly there’s no mountain scenery but I don’t really mind. I usually go skiing in the evenings. Snow Planet stays open until 11 pm and gives me the opportunity to enjoy a bit of sport and a change of scenery really close to my home.

From Amsterdam, Bus 82 (Marnixstraat) going to IJmuiden (around €6.00 return).

In winter, every day from 9 am to 11 pm.

I spend a lot of time in front of the computer, but I prefer to be followed on a bicycle than on Twitter. I love Amsterdam for...its little streets, riches, treasures and all of the spots where you can get a really good beer. Follow the guide! My little extra: discovering nature
