Due to work on the high-speed line in The Netherlands, trains will not stop at the Schiphol station.

The Schiphol station can only be reached by local trains departing from Rotterdam. To reach Paris, Brussels or Antwerp, you must purchase a ticket from Rotterdam. Print then your travel confirmation to travel free between Rotterdam and Schiphol. This will be your ticket.

Amsterdam is a very green city but I sometimes want to enjoy a bit of wilder nature, something which makes a nice change from the turfed spaces and polders which are too perfectly aligned. And I don’t have to look far; it’s a train trip away and called the Nationaal Park Zuid-Kennemerland.

A park with a variety of landscapes

The National Park of South Kennemerland is a nature reserve between Haarlem and the sea, 20 km from Amsterdam. This is an area made up of dunes, hilly and not very stable, with a fragile ecosystem. The park contains wild animals and several rare and protected species of plant.
It is not a very large park but there are many different types of landscape there: grassland with grazing bison, which were brought in from Poland, forests, a spotless beach and lakes. My favourite area is where there are dunes with sparse vegetation. The trees there appear to be fighting with an invisible enemy. The branches writhe about in the sky and the roots dance around on the sand.

A visitor hut

I like to get around the park by bike, but some places are only open to walkers. There is a visitor hut which suggests daily activities just a few minutes’ bus ride from Overveen station.

I spend a lot of time in front of the computer, but I prefer to be followed on a bicycle than on Twitter. I love Amsterdam for...its little streets, riches, treasures and all of the spots where you can get a really good beer. Follow the guide! My little extra: discovering nature
