Tourists coming to Amsterdam sometimes expect to find windmills, those typical features of the Netherlands landscape. Sadly, modern life has chased them out of town, leaving only 8 of them, and these remaining ones are a long way from the centre. Nearly all of them are preserved for history but are now used as private homes.
The only windmill that is open to the public
There is only one windmill in Amsterdam that is open to the public every day. This is the Sloten windmill. It is also the one farthest from the city centre but you can still get there by tram.
The Sloten windmill is a polder mill, which means it is used to adjust the water level. In fact Sloten is on a boundary between two polders of different levels and the mill pumps water upwards. This activity doesn’t take place every day, but if you’re lucky you may get to see this highly intriguing operation.
A twofold visit
It is the miller who is in charge of the visits there, and he will explain how water is managed in the Netherlands and how his mill operates. The visit can be continued in the neighbouring house, where they keep old cooperage tools.
Bus 358 from Centraal Station towards Badhoevedorp or tram 2 towards Nieuw Sloten (the windmill is 10 minutes from the terminus).
I spend a lot of time in front of the computer, but I prefer to be followed on a bicycle than on Twitter. I love Amsterdam for...its little streets, riches, treasures and all of the spots where you can get a really good beer. Follow the guide! My little extra: discovering nature
