The Brouwerij 't IJ may be a classic and popular café with a really pleasant atmosphere, but I require more than this for a place to become one of my favourites. As a brewery, it is principally the place where they make the beer they serve there, but it is also a beer * with a very short name but a very long taste.

The brewery near the mill

The brewery is located in premises which were once public baths, near a windmill, which is a very useful landmark. This windmill is closed to the public, but the brewery is open every day.

At the counter, there’s a choice of 7 different beers, all produced in-house, from a straightforward pils, to white beer, to triple. My favourite is the Colombus, a fairly strong amber-coloured beer. I should advise you to drink it in moderation, as its alcohol level is 9% abv.

When the sun is shining, I prefer a lighter beer under the pergola on the terrace. But when it’s not, you can go inside and admire the largest collection of beer bottles from Europe. If you fancy a snack, there is charcuterie and cheese available, which are the perfect accompaniment for the beers there.

Enjoy it while there’s still time

More than just a café, it’s a place to come and taste things (proeflokaal), which means it can sell its beers at low prices but only at certain times of day (between 4 pm and 8 pm). During this brief period, the Brouwerij 't IJ attracts a large and varied mix of people, which makes it a really pleasant and happy place to be. That’s why I keep coming back.

Opening hours: every day from 4 pm until 8 pm

* Alcoholic beverages should be consumed in moderation. Please drink responsibly.

I spend a lot of time in front of the computer, but I prefer to be followed on a bicycle than on Twitter. I love Amsterdam for...its little streets, riches, treasures and all of the spots where you can get a really good beer. Follow the guide! My little extra: discovering nature
