Due to work on the high-speed line in The Netherlands, trains will not stop at the Schiphol station.

For a long time I didn’t think there were any small, simple, high-quality restaurants in Amsterdam; the kind where the chef is always at the stove or in the dining room sharing his latest culinary brainwaves with the customers.

Plush and intimate

Madelief is run by a Belgian couple who welcome their customers in either Flemish or French, whichever you prefer. The wife, Madelief, is based in the kitchen and she is responsible for the lovely dishes on the menu. Her husband is front-of-house, and he is a fount of information about their top-quality dishes and ingredients.
The menu is short, but quite sufficient, as all the dishes are mouth-watering. The restaurant isn’t very big either, but instead has a plush and intimate feel, to the extent that you almost start getting meditative, but I always end up talking to Jean-Michel, the owner. He has loads of adventures to tell you about.

Authenticity

The food takes its inspiration from Belgian and French cooking. This kind of exotic cooking is sometimes overdone in Amsterdam, but here it really does feel unforced. The ingredients they use are either organic or else locally-produced. And of course things are mainly France-based when it comes to the wine list, which is not a problem for me at all!

I spend a lot of time in front of the computer, but I prefer to be followed on a bicycle than on Twitter. I love Amsterdam for...its little streets, riches, treasures and all of the spots where you can get a really good beer. Follow the guide! My little extra: discovering nature
