A picture full of contrasts
Dortmund's city centre offers a picture full of contrasts: Historic buildings rub shoulders with post-war architecture and concrete constructions with Romanesque churches. Visit one of the numerous churches in the city centre – the view over Dortmund from the Reinoldikirche’s belfry is particularly rewarding. Another worthwhile visit is the Friedensplatz, with Dortmund's Town Hall and the Old Civic Hall. The square is dominated by the Peace Column (Friedenssäule), on which the word "Peace" is written in gilded lettering in various languages. You can relax in the city park "Stadtgarten" and culture lovers will particularly enjoy an evening in the theatre or the opera.
Dortmund, a shopping metropolis
Along the Westenhellweg there is a large number of shops which make any shopaholic’s heart race. Worn out by all the shopping? Treat yourself to a break in one of the numerous street cafés on the Alten Markt, with a view of the Bläserbrunnen fountain.
