Mister Sonneveld was one of the owners of a large tobacco factory in Rotterdam. He used to be a frequent traveller and during his journeys abroad he found interesting technical gadgets, which you will find in the Sonneveld house. This building, which is now called Museumwoning Sonneveld, is built in 1933 and nowadays open for public. Although the house is decorated almost 80 years ago, it’s very modern and furnished with Gispen furniture. If you like watching (historical) interiors, then you definitely must visit this one.

Audio tour

Get your entrance card for the museum house at the NAi, the large museum next to the Sonneveld house. When you have bought a ticket you can enter the house of the Sonneveld family. Visitors are only allowed to enter the house when wearing these (not so fancy) slippers. You put them over your
shoes and I must say it looks very funny. Don’t forget to take an audio tour with, because it gives information that is very nice to know and gives the tour more fun.

Fancy technical gadgets

The modern interior quit surprised me the first time when I visited this place. It doesn’t feel like entering a house from 1933. Most part is decorated with the famous Gispen furniture, made by the Rotterdam designer Willem Gispen. You will find the most surprising technical gadgets, like a
massage shower! The Sonneveld family was a wealthy family, that’s why they could afford all these luxury. Most people in Rotterdam were traveling by tram or bicycle these days, but they had two cars. Madam Sonneveld was even the first lady in Rotterdam that was driving a car!
