Rediscover the Paris Opera this winter and treat yourself to a sumptuous dinner at L’Opéra, the brand new restaurant created by Odile Decq, situated in the heart of the Palais Garnier. From the comfort of bright red chairs, discover the menu for an evening in several acts…
The star is on stage
To visit this temple of music and dance in the afternoon would be a waste. Although the flamboyant décor is sumptuous, the essential ingredient is the music and the associated show. Ballets, recitals and operas follow each other here, and each evening is as bright and festive as New Year’s Eve.
The restaurant, a strong team
Music may feed the soul but it leaves you with an empty stomach…We’ve had to wait 136 years to experience the restaurant that Charles Garnier had envisaged for his palace with its ceilings repainted by Chagall. It needed a strong team to meet the gastronomic and artistic challenges of this project without upsetting the aesthetes.
It is the architect Odile Decq who has set the scene in a modern, evanescent glass bubble which distances the guest from the century old walls and vice versa. Our heritage is safe.
Pierre François Blanc, the establishment’s director, commissioned the double Michelin starred chef Christophe Aribert to create the menu. They offer, for example, a starter of pan-fried foie gras, strawberries, Banyuls vinegar and the opera’s own honey ( €22), a main course of breaded sole and for desert…an all chocolate cake known in French as ‘un opera’, of course!
You have to sing for your supper but in these times of austerity, a little bit of luxury warms both heart and soul.
Lunch menu €36
Evening ‘à la carte’ approximately €70
Comfortable in working-class neighbourhoods and the tonier areas of Paris, I never get tired of rediscovering this timeless city. The Sex Pistols set the pace when I was younger. New technologies fill my working days now. My little extra: discovering fine eating spots around the capital for romantic dinners!
