Rainer Kiel is a major artist whose work mainly comprises mobile installations. To see them you have to take a fun, art-focused stroll around Cologne.
A unique past
Born in Bonn in 1965, Rainer Kiel first studied geography before starting an apprenticeship as a cycle mechanic. He had a series of small jobs in the four corners of Germany before realising that recycling was his vocation. The skills he picked up as an apprentice steered him towards metal wire structures, and it wasn’t long before he made a name for himself in the artistic and cultural sphere.
I was fascinated by Kiel’s work and decided to meet him. He explained that his true vocation is recycling. He only works with material that has already been used and never buys anything. His friends and fans “salvage” the raw materials he uses.
Every spring he displays work in different parts of the city (you can’t miss it). And meeting him couldn’t be easier: send him an e-mail and he’ll invite you to his workshop, which is full of work that will take your breath away. It’s also possible to buy his work on-site, but the choice is staggering and might leave you in a twist!
The Cologne area provides my daughters and I with real quality of life. I like conviviality, healthy things, crafts and every kind of creativity. Together, we'll explore the side of Cologne that promotes the art of living. My little extra: the art of living.
