The Tanzbrunnen is among Cologne's best known vantage points – including a unique view over the Rhine and the cathedral. Since 1957, this has been a place to visit, with its breathtaking canopy roof. The schedule is full of variety and certainly offers events for every taste.

Have a party around the star shaft tent, somewhat reminiscent of Sydney's Opera House

The star shaft tent is the outstanding feature of Cologne's Tanzbrunnen, the place for spectacular events for audiences of up to 12,500. The extraordinary Brunnen unit was built in the 50s and is now a national monument. Over a hundred jets and lights provide a spectacular water display. The star shaft tent over the Brunnen covers an area of about 500 square metres. Together with the adjoining Rhine terraces, the theatre or the km 689 Cologne Beach Club, this gives an infinite number of possibilities for events.

One event chases the next

The Tanzbrunnen's event calendar is invariably packed – a look at the website is well worthwhile. February is of course dominated by Cologne's Carnival, with its numerous colourful costume and lavish shows. Not a dry eye in the house. On 6 February 2014, for example, there was the quaint "Jeck es jeil" [Mad's the thing!] session and on 13 February the "Dat kölsche Hätz" with the profits going to the Foundation for Children with Cancer. To anyone who finds this much carnival, then I recommend "Rhythm of the Dance" on 4 February, the dance and music spectacular with Irish Dance its theme.

Jens, 30 TRENDY ADVERTISER

I've always loved Cologne. The city is industrial and romantic at the same time. I love my city for its galleries, classical concerts and elegant restaurants and its traditional and very trendy bars! My little extra: I love words, the arts and literature!
