Succulent tarts and luxury delicaciesCologne
Antwerpener Straße 39
Madame Miammiam is a paradise for those who like sweet things. Behind the shop window, the opulent tarts, the multi-coloured petits fours and other pastries catch the eye of passers-by and oblige them to stop. Once they have pushed open the door of the shop, any resistance to the call of the senses is futile.
Biscuit- and butter cream-based works of art
The creations that Anne Schultes offers us under her signature of “Madame Miammiam” are, quite simply, masterpieces. It was in London, following her artistic studies, that she acquired her expertise, seeking to give full rein to the fascination she discovered for sugared delicacies, especially wedding cakes. Her choice pieces made of biscuit, butter cream and frangipani in bright colours should preferably be consumed in the shop. Although, it should be said, having to choose is pure torture. The simplest thing to do is first to order one or other of the many coffee specialities on offer and then to allow yourself to be quietly immersed in the surrounding cornucopia.
As a precious souvenir to take home when you leave this little cake shop with its very Parisian charm, I would recommend the hand-made petits fours, with Cologne cathedral as their decoration. With proper packaging they should survive the trip home. And Madame Miammiam has more up her sleeve than highly coloured decoration, as she proves with her skull & crossbone tarts, which will undoubtedly be the focus of admiration at any festive gathering. I even feel somewhat guilty biting into a decorated cup cake with its fine sugared motif and swallowing such a gastronomic pearl, much like destroying a porcelain sculpture. But even this moral reticence was not enough to stop me just going for it, it is just too good not to be eaten.
I've always loved Cologne. The city is industrial and romantic at the same time. I love my city for its galleries, classical concerts and elegant restaurants and its traditional and very trendy bars! My little extra: I love words, the arts and literature!
