An oasis of peace and quiet, the Stadtgarten not only features century-old trees, but also a mini-library nestled in the greenery that offers an unusual concept for book lovers.

Calm, at last

Located away from the hustle and bustle of the city, the Stadtgarten is one of Cologne’s oldest parks, and an oasis of peace and quiet. As far as I can tell, it is one of the rare parks in Cologne that has not been invaded by summer barbecues and where you can enjoy a breath of fresh air (without the smell of grilled meat). Neither too small, nor too large, the Stadtgarten is rather calm, even though there are many visitors when the weather is fine.

In the shade of the plane trees

The Stadtgarten is an ideal spot for a picnic or a nap, in the sun or in the shade of one of its century-old trees. The park has more than 50 different species! Trees are also at the heart of a new popular activity: the slack line. A cord is tied between two trees so it hangs down like a hammock, at around 1 metre from the ground. Would-be tightrope walkers try to keep their balance or execute various jumps and acrobatic figures.

At the end of a garden path...a library!

Not only is the quiet atmosphere of the park ideal for reading, there is also a "mini-library" offering passing book lovers an innovative lending system. The idea is simple: books can be borrowed free of charge, and without registering, for a maximum period of two weeks. Nestled in a little futuristic hut, the “minibib” contains more than 1,000 classic or contemporary works in German and English - one more reason to visit the Stadtgarten!

Metro: Friesenplatz or Hans-Böckler-Platz

“Minibib” library hours:
Monday to Saturday: 3 pm to 6 pm
Tuesday to Friday: 1 pm to 6 pm
Sunday: noon to 6 pm

Coralie, 31 JOURNALIST BY DAY

I'm a translator and editor for several publications and I love the hidden side of the city, its secret gardens, its discrete gourmet restaurants and its new, high-design spots. Outings with my friends end late at night. My little extra: a dynamic, fun and really trendy Cologne!
