Just like at grandma's house, at "granny Kleinmann's” you're sure to eat well! Rustic, non-nonsense fare makes for a simple homemade treat.

A landmark in traditional cooking

The Zülpicher Strasse, which is very popular with students, would probably only have cocktail bars and fast food joints today if “grandma” Kleinmann hadn’t set up her restaurant there and made it into a temple devoted to local cuisine well before any of her neighbours arrived on the scene. And Mrs. Kleinmann has seen many a graduating class come and go! Even though she no longer works in the kitchen, the restaurant has stuck to the recipe that made it famous: simple, high-quality, traditional food.

“Just like grandma used to make”

Just like grandma’s house, there are old photos on the wall and the building could use some "fixing up”, but that doesn’t really matter because the food is so good! And the specialty of the house? Schnitzel: an XXL breaded veal cutlet, usually served with potato salad. However, you can order the “royal” version, which comes with camembert, jam and sautéed potatoes. Generous portions and reasonable prices help explain the happy atmosphere. And, just like at grandma’s, it's better to phone ahead, especially on the weekend!

Open Tuesday to Sunday from 5pm to 1am (kitchen open to 11 pm).

Coralie, 31 JOURNALIST BY DAY

I'm a translator and editor for several publications and I love the hidden side of the city, its secret gardens, its discrete gourmet restaurants and its new, high-design spots. Outings with my friends end late at night. My little extra: a dynamic, fun and really trendy Cologne!
