The ”Kulturkirche” (church of culture) offers a high quality programme that is resolutely innovative and eclectic, presenting numerous cultural events of the highest calibre to new audiences.

You don't "tinker around” with culture

In 2002, seeking to escape from the “amateurish" approach to staging events, the Lutheran Church of Nippes decided to move into top gear, and set up the ”Church of culture”. The aim of the endeavour was to invest the Kulturkirche (which is still a religious building) with an entirely separate role as a professional player in the world of culture. Due to a strict quality code and the hard work of its volunteers, the Kulturkirche has successfully established itself as an “essential venue” for many artists and for audiences outside of its congregation.

An explosive mix of genres

By day, the usual religious ceremonies take place behind its red-brick façade, but after nightfall its unique acoustics and architecture become available for artists from a variety of backgrounds – with around 2 events per week. With pop concerts (Coco Rosie), rock concerts (The Good, the Bad & the Queen), rap, classics and soul, readings, dance and comedy shows and film showings, the events display an impressive diversity and complete freedom of expression. Just go where your curiosity takes you!

Coralie, 31 JOURNALIST BY DAY

I'm a translator and editor for several publications and I love the hidden side of the city, its secret gardens, its discrete gourmet restaurants and its new, high-design spots. Outings with my friends end late at night. My little extra: a dynamic, fun and really trendy Cologne!
