The most recent museum in Cologne, the Rautenstrauch-Joest, takes visitors on a fascinating journey. An instructive visit that is not to be missed.

An initiation in world cultures

Inaugurated in 2010, the Rautenstrauch-Joest Museum of world cultures (RJM) is named after an ethnographer from Cologne, Wilhelm Joest. Objects he brought back from his travels (more than 3,500) and his writings are the bases of the permanent collection. Over an area of 3,600 m², objects and displays bear testimony to the diversity of ways of live, beliefs and identities of our world. From Indonesian theatre puppets to the tepees of North American Indians, the collection avoids the pitfalls of excessive detail thanks to innovative staging.

An interactive visit

“Off the beaten path” is the theme of the visit, or rather the RJM visitors “trail”. Everything is done to encourage an active role thanks to new technologies. You can turn the pages of a huge book and watch as words and images spring from its pages, as if by magic. Young and old can "rummage around" the shelves of an old bookcase to find the origins of everyday objects. Multiple audio or video displays encourage interaction. For example, there is a room devoted to bias where stereotyped images are projected on a wall. On the wall there are also windows that allow the visitor to look beyond the cliché.

Coralie, 31 JOURNALIST BY DAY

I'm a translator and editor for several publications and I love the hidden side of the city, its secret gardens, its discrete gourmet restaurants and its new, high-design spots. Outings with my friends end late at night. My little extra: a dynamic, fun and really trendy Cologne!
