A few hundred yards from the Atomium, you can play with spheres that are slightly smaller and more yellow than those associated with the 1958 World’s Fair. Nothing beats a knock around at the ever-welcoming Royal Primerose.
It was in 1927 that it all began, in the Schaerbeek municipality. The club went from strength to strength and in 1958 moved to the legendary steel atom, where it remains today. It has enjoyed irreproachable success over the years. With no less than 27 national team titles, the Royal Primerose has nothing to prove.
Pleasure above all remains at the heart of the Royal Primerose. It may be competitive, but it was the sense of fair play and the warm welcome that drew me here, as well as the beauty of the place. The club’s 25 courts, most of which are clay, are surrounded by vegetation and are a priceless sporting resource. The warm manner of tennis coaches, Fred and Audrey, and bar staff, Manu and Fred, only added to the experience.
As well as tennis, the Royal Primerose has two squash courts and a brand new fitness centre for those who prefer to pump iron or run on treadmills. In May, the club ran the first successful WTA Brussels Open, where Venus Williams, Caroline Wozniacki and other top players were in action. Be sure to check out this marvellous sporting arena.
I teach tennis in the city and also write about culture for a number of publications. I love to travel and meet people. My city? It's an improv concert in a down-to-earth bar, an exhibition built on a work site, a play performed in the heart of the old city... My little extra: combining sport and culture!
