There are apparently two types of human beings: those that love cats and those that hate them. I don't mind saying loud and clear that I couldn't imagine life without cats. So, I was thrilled to visit the Katten Kabinet, the one and only museum in the world solely dedicated to cats. I was nearly purring with contentment.

A palace for felines

The Katten Kabinet is located in the chic and elegant Herengracht neighbourhood. The museum is in a luxurious 17th century building consisting of five different rooms, all charming and refined. I love the 1750 dance hall with its chandeliers and crystal appliqués and the music room with its piano with a walnut tail. Lovers of specialized literature can consult books on cats in the library, which is totally dedicated to them.

Learn everything there is to know about cats

With its amazing collection of paintings, sculptures and other art works, the Katten Kabinet offers an incredible vision of the feline world. I'm always amazed by the cat mummy from Bubastis in Egypt. Many artists have been inspired by cats: Rembrandt, Monet and Picasso are all here. Open Tuesday through Friday from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, weekends from noon to 5:00 pm and holidays from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. Closed December 25, 26, 31, January 1 and April 30.
