THE FLOWER MARKET
The symbol of an entire cityAmsterdam
The flower market is a little jewel of the Dutch capital and an institution to the residents of Amsterdam. People come from around the world to stroll and admire all sorts of flowers and plants. Located on the Singel canal, this floating market is held exclusively on barges, which makes it unique in the world. In fact, it's the only flower market of its kind.
An ancient tradition
I love the floating market because the smells and colours mix all year round and have been for centuries. The first floating market was held in 1862. Flowers and plants were brought in by barge. Today people come to find high-quality flowers including tulips, narcissus, daffodils and magnificent roses. The floating market is also known for its bulbs, of which there is an enormous selection for visitors.
A highly thought of place
The floating market has an excellent reputation in Europe. Florists from France, Belgium, and the United Kingdom come for supplies on a regular basis, regardless of the season. It's open every day, without exception, which means that I can take long walks on weekends to buy new varieties. You're nearly always certain to find that special something!
I love Amsterdam's open spirit. It's easy to meet people and have rich, interesting conversations. The heart of the city is bubbling over with cultural initiatives, secret restaurants and nature routes that relax you in no time. I want to share it all with you!
