I regularly go to the Stadsschouwburg, the city’s municipal theatre. They put on original shows there by well-known writers, as well as by other people who are less familiar to the general public. Whether they’re avant-garde or more accessible, the productions put on at the Stadsschouwburg are always exciting and innovative. I love the fin de siècle atmosphere of its opulent interior, which is similar to some of Europe’s best opera houses.

Neo-Renaissance architecture

Symptomatic of the styles that were in vogue during the 19th century, the municipal theatre is a very fine example of the neo-Renaissance style in Amsterdam. Its huge entrance and large staircase set the tone in terms of aesthetics and opulence. The omnipresent gilt and red velvet give the location a baroque aspect, together with various period paintings.

Toneelgroep Amsterdam

For 10 years, Ivo van Hove has been artistic director of Toneelgroep Amsterdam, the largest theatrical company in the country, and it’s at the Stadsschouwburg that the company gives a public performance every year. Well-known for its ability to blow away the cobwebs from pieces in the classical repertoire, van Hove also takes risks with more controversial choices. He is highly respected in the Netherlands and the reputation of the theatre is such that various international directors go there to stage their plays.

Open from 10 am from Mondays to Saturdays and two hours before the play begins on Sundays.
Closing times vary depending on programmes.

Romain, 35 ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

I love Amsterdam's open spirit. It's easy to meet people and have rich, interesting conversations. The heart of the city is bubbling over with cultural initiatives, secret restaurants and nature routes that relax you in no time. I want to share it all with you!
