Visit the Amsterdam Begijnhof, and leave behind the perpetual bustle of the city to take a step back in time.

Shhhhh…

In this garden, surrounded by beautiful typical houses dating from the 17th and 18th centuries, we silently contemplate the women who once inhabited these buildings, who without being religious, chose to dedicate their lives to God, care for the sick and provide an education for the poor. A break that is good for body and soul and which also gives you the chance to discover one of the most beautiful old houses in the city at number 34. Built from wood, this building with its black façade dates back to 1530.

Push open the door and be captivated

Today, Begijnhof is still inhabited by celibate women (whose file must be approved by the foundation responsible for the premises) and visits are only permitted until 17:00 so as to give the 100 or so inhabitants a little privacy. Do not expect to see the ladies. Often disturbed by the tourists, who only consider them to be accessories and part of the decoration, they wait until the tourists leave to hoe their beds filled with roses and hydrangeas. They remain out of sight unless they have to go to a service in one of the two religious buildings that comprise the Begijnhof: an English reformed church and a catholic chapel.

The Begijnhof is not a public place. It is not accessible to groups or tour operators. This is a meditative place, so visitors are asked to behave appropriately Open from 09:00-17:00.

Laurence, 46 a cool mum

I’m the mother of two supercharged children. I’ve also been living a great love affair with Holland for the past 20 years! I’ll take you to places in Amsterdam that will make you feel good, where the products and the welcome are high quality and where, most importantly, you’ll never stress out. Ready to go?
