Amsterdam the intolerantHold your nose and close your eyes. A real gem rises above the acrid smoke of the coffee shops and the dull light of the red neon. It’s a 17th century town house with a narrow gabled façade. Under its roof is a secret Catholic church that can hold 150 worshippers! This unusual place of worship was built in 1663 during the Reformation (when Catholics were forbidden from celebrating mass in public). It makes one wonder about Amsterdam's reputation for tolerance...
A moving and authentic placeThe visit begins with the rooms where the merchant Hartman lived with his wife and six children and welcomed guests during the Golden Age. The small size of the rooms only really becomes apparent on arrival in the church itself. Its riches are displayed two floors high and it has two rows of superimposed balconies. Painted in old pink and lit with gas lamps, it has an altar with trompe-l'oeil marble columns that frame a representation of Christ's baptism. The large organs, wood benches, the marriage chapel and the confessional have all been preserved. For our amazement. Open Monday through Saturday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, Sunday and holidays from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm. Closed January 1st and April 30th. Audio-tours available in French, English, Dutch, Italian, Spanish and German. A mass is given in the church on the first Sunday of every month from October to May.
I’m the mother of two supercharged children. I’ve also been living a great love affair with Holland for the past 20 years! I’ll take you to places in Amsterdam that will make you feel good, where the products and the welcome are high quality and where, most importantly, you’ll never stress out. Ready to go?
