Miffy is one of those characters that took a central role during my childhood. If I remember correctly I called her “little white rabbit”. It was only a lot later on that I discovered that Miffy was Dutch and that her real name was Nijntje. She was created in 1955 by Dick Bruna. The story goes that he came up with the idea of this rabbit for his little boy after he saw one that looked like her in the sand dunes.

An international star

The thirty or so Nijntje books are now available in over 40 languages, more often under the name of Miffy. I’m not alone in getting a bit nostalgic about her. So when I need to find a present for a small child, I’ve got just the thing to provide a souvenir from the Netherlands.
There are a number of Miffy-based products available, including baby crockery, schoolbags, and tee shirts. You can find them just about everywhere, but the choice is often limited.

Your search is over; they’ve got everything

Nijntje has two shops in the Netherlands: one is in Maastricht and the other, joy of joys, is in Amsterdam. They’ve got all the children’s toys. But they’ve also got toys for adults, like office lamps and my favourite bicycle bell!
It’s also easy to get back to basics with the children’s books, which include the Miffy editions as well as many others, Dick Bruna having written a hundred or so books. The choice is almost overwhelming, but you can be sure of some great memories.

I spend a lot of time in front of the computer, but I prefer to be followed on a bicycle than on Twitter. I love Amsterdam for...its little streets, riches, treasures and all of the spots where you can get a really good beer. Follow the guide! My little extra: discovering nature
