Architect Piet Blom's cube houses were symbols of Rotterdam's architectural renewal in the 1980s. They’re still fascinating. Curious? Take a look inside!

An urban forest

The cube houses were born in 1984. Piet Blom wanted to create a village in the city, a living space that was both peaceful and convivial. He imagined an urban forest in which each house represented a tree. Take a look at the architectural group before you and you'll be struck by the resemblance. The 38 houses rise up on pylons that are like tree trunks. The 45° tilt cleverly suggests the silhouette of vigorous trees. Stuck one next to the other, they encircle an inner courtyard which doubles as a communal garden for residents.

The interior design enigma

The cube houses are each about 100 m² on three levels and are still lived in today (the Stayokay youth hostel is located here). Looking at them, you're bound to wonder how they're laid out inside. Well, you can visit one: the Kubuswoning. The visit will only take you about 10 minutes, but you’ll get a good idea of what daily life is like between the perpendicular walls...somewhat whimsical!

I work in communications and have kept an on-line fashion journal for years. I'll show you around Rotterdam, my home town, a magical place open on the world. Sparkling restaurants, deliciously hidden between sea and sky. My little extra: globetrotter and multi-lingual
