The Machinist is an old building in Rotterdam West which used to be a school for Marine engineering students. Now it is beautifully renovated and has been given a new purpose; you can have dinner at the Machinist, watch movies, go to a party, or enjoy comedy/ music night.
Last year I was at the opening of the “new” Machinist, a very crowded and exciting event because the re-building of the place took quite some time. So everyone was curious how it now looked like. And it looked great! It’s an old building and they managed to save the old elements of the architecture, so it’s kept its “grandeur”.The building is very spacious, if I were a child I would definitely play hide and seek there the whole time ! The large rooms upstairs have become workplaces for the creative and artistic people from Rotterdam West. As soon as I found this out, I made an agreement with myself. Once I’m a famous writer (I’m a daydreamer and I dream of being the ‘Carrie Bradshaw’ from Rotterdam, how cool would that be hihi) and earn enough money for my own working space, I will definitely rent a room at the Machinist!
At ground level there is a large dining room with lovely seats near the fireplace. In winter it’s really cosy to have your dinner over there and in summer you can eat outside if you want to. The food is good and quite affordable. In the back you will find a very nice bar.
I also do love the Machinist because there is a lot going on in this place. Such as every 4th Saturday of the month they organise live performances with local bands. When I was younger I was in a local band too (at that time I dreamed of being Madonna, I guess that turned out differently !) but now that I’m no longer playing in a band myself I love watching other local bands. And if you like comedy you must visit The Machinist on the 3rd Saturday of the month. You can enjoy the humoristic jokes of top comedians from the Netherlands and abroad!
Last but not least…
In the past it was an engineering room, now it’s a cinema! The Machinist has its own cinema at the basement. It’s small (35 seats), but really cosy. Every Friday night you can watch several old movies there such as Rope or Singing in the Rain. Just have a look at their website for the programme.
So if you’re a cult lover and about to visit Rotterdam, just make sure you add the Machinist to your to-do list. I’m convinced you would love it!
I work in communications and have kept an on-line fashion journal for years. I'll show you around Rotterdam, my home town, a magical place open on the world. Sparkling restaurants, deliciously hidden between sea and sky. My little extra: globetrotter and multi-lingual
