Known for its owners unique collection, which mixes different types of works, styles and periods, this gallery in Cologne is not to be missed.

A little history

The Michael Werner Gallery first opened its doors in 1963 in Berlin. It came to Cologne in 1969 before setting up its New York extension in 1990.
In Germany, the gallery’s notoriety stems from the owner’s misadventures. As soon as it opened in 1963, a work was seized by the public prosecutor for obscenity and immorality!
This famous painting from the 60s by Georg Baselitz is no longer in the collection but is currently on display at the Museum Ludwig.

A modern gallery

The sober rooms are lit with very bright white neon lights.
The works on show are mostly hung on the walls, though some are simply sitting on the floor. There are paintings, drawings, photographs and sculptures, but also a number of other types of works to be contemplated, for example antique and contemporary furniture.

A contemporary choice of exhibits

The gallery exhibits some of the most important contemporary artists, century such as Eugène Leroy, a key figure of 20th century painting, Per Kirkeby, a major player in contemporary Scandinavian art or the young artist Aaron Curry, known for his collages, his “Installation View” series and his fluorescent gouaches.
