An emblematic 1950s cinema that fell into disrepair, Residenz reopened its doors to the general public in 2011, newly decorated and with a completely new concept.
I was treated to a trip to Residenz as a surprise. At the ticket office, the ticket price left me rather perplexed: more than €30 for two people. Intrigued, I accepted the welcome drink, put my coat in the cloakroom and followed the usher (!) in a golden waistcoat into a room which combines the theatrical side of old fashioned cinemas with the ambience of a lounge bar. The highlight of the evening, apart from the film - were the seats! Large, recliner seats that almost went horizontal - this was a case of extreme comfort...be careful not to nod off!
A cinema unlike the others
You can bank on an exclusive ambience and first rate service - that is what the founders of Residenz were aiming for. Here, a menu of appetizers knocks popcorn off top spot, and there are short films to replace a portion of the ads. From a programming point of view, we remain in familiar territory (blockbusters) but Residenz also shows live broadcasts of operas, concerts and ballets. Verdict? Worth the money in terms of the services offered, certainly something to do again.

I'm a translator and editor for several publications and I love the hidden side of the city, its secret gardens, its discrete gourmet restaurants and its new, high-design spots. Outings with my friends end late at night. My little extra: a dynamic, fun and really trendy Cologne!
