Welcome to the Biergarten, the place to be for summer festivities and a must-see for anyone interested in German gastronomy. A “beer garden” is like a huge sidewalk café, located in a natural setting, often under the trees.
One of the most popular ones is nestled in the heart of the gastronomic and cultural complex of the famous Stadtgarten, which includes no less than two concert halls, a restaurant and bar, an open-air restaurant and, of course...a beer garden! An authentic Biergarten must have shady trees, a relaxing setting, garden furniture or, even better, long wooden tables and benches that can seat 8 to 10 people.
The main element of course is…beer! In the Stadtgarten beer garden you can try the local brew, called Kölsch, served in 20 cc glasses that look like laboratory phials. Of course, you can order other beers like Weizen (a Bavarian white beer served in 50 cc glasses) or various alcohol-free beverages. As for the food, you can enjoy simple tasty fare from the on site "food truck" (chips, very good burgers, prawns, etc) or more elaborate dishes at the open-air restaurant “Al Bosco”.
One of the most popular addresses in town, this Biergarten is always full (and sometimes overflowing!) whenever the weather is fine. With a little patience, everyone can find a place in the sun – or under a shady tree!
Open from noon to midnight, weather permitting.
* Alcoholic beverages should be consumed in moderation. Please drink responsibly.
I'm a translator and editor for several publications and I love the hidden side of the city, its secret gardens, its discrete gourmet restaurants and its new, high-design spots. Outings with my friends end late at night. My little extra: a dynamic, fun and really trendy Cologne!
