The emblem of the city and the third largest church in the world, Cologne cathedral (Kölner Dom) is one of Germany’s most frequently visited monuments. A unique guided tour of the cathedral allows you to view it from the rooftops.

All aboard for Kölner Dom

For Thalys travellers, it is virtually impossible to miss the cathedral, as it practically forms a single building with the train station, located close to the Rhine. That means that organising a visit couldn’t be easier, you can even dash over between train connections. The ‘basic’ tour of the gothic cathedral starts with the front square, the nave and the choir, which are accessible except during mass times. On the inside as well as outside, the vast height of the building takes your breath away.

A multitude of perspectives

The city’s largest monument – no building this large would be allowed to be built today – the cathedral offers an incomparable panorama. The 533 steps lead up to the top of the tower. For visitors looking for a different perspective, a highly popular tour is the visit to the roofs of the cathedral. Available only through advance registration (and it’s best to book two or three months in advance!), this guided tour takes you for a one-hour exploration of the secrets of the vaults, framework and gargoyles. Visiting hours : From Monday to Friday from 16:00 – 17:45 (start of the last tour) Saturday from 10:00 to 16:00 (start of the last tour) Reservations : From Monday to Thursday from 10:00 – 13:00 by telephone on 0049 221 17940-555 The tour is reserved for visitors ages 16 and up, who are not afraid of heights. Reservations can be made for groups (up to 17 people) or individuals. The tour is offered in various languages including English, French and Spanish, subject to a supplementary fee. NB: tour involves climbing 240 steps if the lift is unavailable.
Coralie, 31 JOURNALIST BY DAY

I'm a translator and editor for several publications and I love the hidden side of the city, its secret gardens, its discrete gourmet restaurants and its new, high-design spots. Outings with my friends end late at night. My little extra: a dynamic, fun and really trendy Cologne!
