Some mornings when I'm feeling extra hungry, I make a detour into the city centre before going to work. Because for a really good breakfast, you have to head to Charli's. The Swiss biscuits and pain au chocolat are a temptation along with the almond croissants. Pastries of such fine quality are rare in Brussels.

"You'll find the best pain au chocolat here"

It was Charles, the founder of the bakery and a lover of the finer things, who told me that in all seriousness. And he's not wrong - Charles knows what he's talking about and there's a good reason why Charli's is one of the best bakeries in Brussels. Even so, I still waited to try one before agreeing. Sat in the small tea room, I tasted my cappuccino and pain au chocolat - which were indeed excellent - while looking into the studio which is visible from the tea room. Seeing all these yummy treats come out of the oven made me even hungrier. I followed on with an almond croissant, telling myself that this would be the last one.

Back at teatime

Good addresses must be shared. My friends decided to join me at Charli's for a second round at teatime. The meeting point was place Sainte-Catherine, a stone's throw from the bakery. On walking up to the shop, they pointed out that the window and logo are rather insignificant. But once in front of the window, all eyes were on the colourful pastries and the golden, beautifully risen breads. After having tried a vanilla éclair, I left with a beer bread with pumpkin seeds, a bakery's signature bread which has its own following of fans.
Tip for foodies: if you like to have a wider selection of choices, we recommend you go there on a Friday or Saturday as the numbers produced are greater.

Open Tuesday to Saturday, from 07:30-19:00 Sunday 08:00-13:30 Closed on Mondays.
