An iconic Brussels' night spot, Chez Maman revisits the great classics of song every Thursday, Friday and Saturday night. This is a gay-friendly bar where Maman and her transvestites provide entertainment for cheeky and boisterous evenings.

Strass and sequins

The little Rue des Grands Carmes is located by the Bourse, in the heart of Brussels and the gay district. Chez Maman, is a small café-concert venue that has been giving now-famous drag shows for nearly 18 years. The place is small, intimate, and windowless. There are no tables, just a long counter accessed by a staircase right by the bar. Maman, the queen of the premises appears and makes her way through the crowd. She's gracious and witty. LaDiva Live gracefully descends the staircase. The evening is about to begin.

Choupette, Sable, Marla and the others

A buxom brunette dressed in a gold sequinned dress, the artist floats down the staircase sensually and gracefully. The bar becomes her stage as the bewitched Brussels' audience looks on. She starts to sing the first notes of Tina Turner's GoldenEye and the crowd gets fired up and joins in, singing with her throughout the performance. The drag show continues. Choupette, Marla, Sable, Chico and Megara follow her on stage and keep the audience on fire.

I teach tennis in the city and also write about culture for a number of publications. I love to travel and meet people. My city? It's an improv concert in a down-to-earth bar, an exhibition built on a work site, a play performed in the heart of the old city... My little extra: combining sport and culture!
