Since 1863 people can enjoy a sweet liqueur* invented by the family De Beuckelaer called Elixir d’Anvers. A tasty drink with 32 different herbs and 37% alcohol*. You can drink it in some typically old bars…

Strong medicine

The History of this drink goes back to the 19th century in a time when Antwerp was growing like never before. Many breweries and distilleries started a company here. The building of Elixir d’Anvers is still located in the centre of Antwerp. Not only people but also animals like it ! This old drink was also given to horses, when they had troubles with their stomach. Whenever I’m starting to develop a cold, my grandmother offers me a small glass of this sweet liquer. I love it!

Just try it !

In these typical old Antwerp bars you can order an elixir*. Many people serve it with ice cubes, some even in a small shot glass. But the real ones will serve it in a special Elixir glass and two ice cubes. You can go to a small bar on a corner of the Melkmarkt, called Pelikaantje. They always have a few bottles* in stock. Sipping from your Antwerp liqueur in the shadow of the cathedral, you can hardly get more in the Antwerp way of living…

* Alcohol abuse is dangerous for health. Drink with moderation.

Antwerp has no secrets for me: designer shops, fashion design and custom-tailoring workshops, pastry shops you can't afford to miss, small, quaint hotels off the main tourist routes, cultural book shops and wine bars... You'll love to come back. Promise! My little extra: fashion!
